Reagancomics (7 of 7): Graphing Graphics

(From Ambush Bug #4.)

Before we wind things up, here are a couple of Reagan portrayals by request, both involving Reagan trying to foster good relations with artificial life-forms.

Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

For anyone in the path of Storm Melissa, please stay safe!

In the US the wannabe King in the White House clearly thinks Louis XVI should be his role model, with his own Versailles (sans the actual magnificence), breaking off trade negotations with, and slapping tariffs on, Canada, for airing an ad he didn't like and

In Britain our actual King unveiled a memorial to LGBT+ soldiers of the past and present, finally acknowledging their contribution to history, 25 years after the formal ban on them serving came to an end.

MCM in London not only showcased the upcoming Marvel Legends Target Exclusive Diamond Form Emma Frost, but from her packaging, confirmed that we are (pause whilst Icon_UK hyperventilates) getting a Marvel Legends Cypher! It seems likely it'll be like the female New Mutant figure from a few years back where we got one body and swappable heads for Mirage, Karma and Wolfsbane, so we get one male body figure and heads for Doug and Sam. Which New Mutants costume it'll be is unknown, classic )Like the recent X-Men 97 Sunspot) or 2009 run (like the Dani/Rahne/Xu'an figure), or how they will address the fact that Sam should be a head taller than Doug. But still.... MARVEL LEGENDS CYPHER!!!

A Happy Hallowe'en to those who celebrate it!

In that light, it seems apt to report this week that the resting place of Elsa lanchester, the Bride of Frankenstein herself has been located and a plaque will be erected, after years of people assuming she'd had her ashes scattered instead of interred.

I just found a delightful horror based podcast, Monstrous Agonies, which are ten minute segments from the advice section for a late night radio station in the UK, offering advice on any number of social and personal issues within the Creature Community.

Anyone got interesting plans for Hallowe'en?

Catacomb of Terror: Hostile Architecture

What do you get when you combine classic EC horror with classic EC's social justice tales (as seen mainly in Shock SuspenStories and their SF titles), and add a contemporary twist? You get the revived EC's Catacomb of Terror. For example, here's the story of a malevolent architect who takes the concept of urban renewal to monstrous extremes.

Warning for gore.

Reagancomics (6 of 7): Getting Kinda Mean About Nancy

Readers who wanted to see Reagan in an actual Captain America story could get one the following year, in Captain America v1 #344, 1988. This issue doesn't feature much of Reagan's real personality for obvious reasons, but it does acknowledge his weird tendency to call Nancy "Mommy."

I mean, it's better than if she called him 'Daddy.' )

Judge Death 2025 Mega Special

I am of the camp that thinks 2000ad's Dark Judges are overused. But a Halloween special, with a story on each one of them, and an excuse for a new Bolland cover piece? No complaints!

Spirits of Violence #1

Oh, great, another relaunch/re-titling for Ghost Rider. Yaaay...

But wait! This title actually contains some cool stuff!

Strange Tales (2025) #1

K40OwGa.jpg

It probably only exists to maintain a trademark, but the art here is really nice! Some Young Avengers and Runaways get trapped in a Jumanji/D&D hybrid, and only the Scarlet Witch can save them.

New look at the Joker/Lex fusion

Someone on Twitter said "We are witnessing levels of yaoi never conceived before" and yeah that seems apt.

Database maintenance

Good morning, afternoon, and evening!

We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)

I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.

Ta for now!

Reagancomics (5 of 7): Addled vs. Evil

Reagan starred in one of DC's highest-profile "graphic novels" of the 1980s, but he could have starred in both. The idea of using Nixon as President didn't occur to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons until some time after Watchmen's initial outline, and there are times when its Nixon is more of a stand-in or proxy for Reagan (Watchmen #8).

Doctor Strange #1 (Dec 2025)

cover for dr strange #1 feat angela

The Stephen Strange we saw in Doctor Strange of Asgard was still stinging from the loss of his Sorcerer Supreme status, and his focus was on gaining enough power to return to Earth, give Doctor Doom a bloody nose, and reclaim his title. None of that happened, because just when he’d gained the power, the way home was cut off from him.

The journey he’s on now is a difficult one. He’s still preoccupied with Earth, still feels that urgent need to return to Clea, to deal with his responsibilities there, but now he finds himself dealing with the responsibilities foisted upon him by his title of Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. He originally sought that power out of a selfish need, so now he has to deal with those ramifications.
